Three Years

Three years ago, at roughly 9:00pm, I was doing this:

photo_3_-fullwtmkMy anniversary date for the evening consists of a luciferase assay, a Western blot, and 12 Excel-sheets worth of qPCR data, which seems rather appropriate, considering that I typically feel more married to the lab than to my own husband.

After three years, I am more thankful than ever to have found a spouse who manages to put up with me. While I may not be high maintenance, high stress, or demanding, my chosen career is all three and more, and I cannot imagine it is pleasant to be married to me (and my experiments, we're a package deal) most of the time. So far, our marriage hasn't quite gone as anticipated (so much for that one year long distance plan), and I am eternally thankful for a husband that acknowledges how important science is to me and has never once pressured me to give it up, even if I appear to be taking the (very) long, (extremely) windy road through graduate school.

After all, what are a few years of living apart when we plan on growing into shriveled old octogenarians together?

Wedding Recap Part 1: The Prologue

It seems fitting to start the recaps today, as six years ago this very day I heaved a giant sigh, rolled my eyes, and reluctantly agreed that Husband could give me the title of his girlfriend… provided that he didn’t actually tell anyone about it.

Of course, with a start like that, a bit of a back story probably helps. So, today, you’re getting the history of Julie & Husband.

We met the day after I moved into college my freshman year (he was a year ahead). Far from love at first sight, I thought he was a pompous jerk (and his opinions of me weren’t much better). However, I found out that he was a biology major and had spent the summer interning at a genetics lab… and already knowing that I may pursue a Ph.D. in research, I thought he could be useful to keep around (yes, I am conniving). We continued to run into each other through mutual activities (science department and music department), and not-yet-Husband even invited me along to a Chanukkah party (just as a friend) at a private university up in the middle of Maryland held by his childhood best friend. Several years later I found out that I was his third choice after two girls he was actually interested in dating were unable to attend, but anxious to escape studying for finals, I decided to go along, and after a night of frying latkes for everyone else in attendance, earned the nickname “Latke Julie” that his friends from high school continue to call me to this day.

Interested in another girl at the time (and I got to hear all about how wonderful and amazing she was), Husband was just interested in pursuing a friendship with me (but I still thought he was a pompous jerk, so I kept my distance). He would leave long-winded messages on my answering machine, complaining about how I never called him back, and upon hearing one of these, a friend who lived down the hall promptly declared that someday, we would wind up married. I laughed and laughed and said I had much better taste in men… Kenny, if you’re out there, I guess after just a few months, you knew me far better than I knew myself.

My sophomore year, we wound up in the same cell biology course. During the week of midterms, my roommate was sick and rater than study for midterms, like any good friend, I had moved into her hospital room and was staying with her and keeping her company as her parents were unable to make the trip out to D.C. While in class, I mentioned that I was not feeling very prepared for the upcoming organic chemistry exam, and Husband (having taken the class the previous year), offered to help me out. The rest, of course, is history. After asking me out a mere nine times, I finally agreed to ONE date (just to get him to leave me alone). One date led to another… and then a month after our first kiss, I finally, reluctantly, agreed to the official title of “girlfriend”.

Four years later, he proposed, and a year and a half after that, we were married. And in case you were wondering, my initial judgment was dead on – I still think Husband is a pompous jerk (and he probably still doesn’t think much better of me!).

140_4047wtmk
I cannot possibly believe that it has only been 6 months, and not 6 years, since our wedding. I don't know if this is a good thing (we're comfortably settled in and have a happy little routine down pat) or a bad thing (we're getting sick of each other already?). Or, perhaps, come to think of it, the feeling like we have been together for so long may have something to do that next week would mark our six year dating anniversary, if we were to still be celebrating it.

Either way, now that six months have come and gone, and my pictures are (mostly) organized and the requests keep rolling in, I vow to start actually offering up some pictures of my wedding, for those of you who have been patiently waiting for half a year.

A couple of hours ago, we pulled back into D.C., after 3.5 weeks away. Everybody should be so fortune as to take a three week honeymoon. It was amazing. Pictures to come.

Tomorrow, lab. I hope morning never comes.

A Frivolous Post

My first committee meeting is coming up soon.... tomorrow, to be exact. If you think this means I am diligently working on my PowerPoint, papers and experiment write-ups spread across my desk, well then clearly... you don't know me very well. Ha. I have a rough-draft of my presentation put together in PowerPoint already, so I am way ahead of the game by my standards! The best presentations I have ever given (as judged by the reaction of my audience and my PI, who says things like 'Wow! That was the best presentation you have ever given!') have literally all been put together within 5 hours of the presentation itself. Last minute is absolutely my thing. So with the bulk of the presentation already set, and T-20 hours until the meeting, I am all about procrastination.
If you're here looking for some insightful, intelligent, science-related discussion, you are dismissed. But if you love shoe porn, read on, because this post is all about my favorite thing in life: shoes. I love shoes. Love shoes. As in, if I'm having a craptacular day in the lab, I'll head straight to BerdorfGoodman.com's online shoe salon and stare dreamily at the Louboutins. Yes, I'm serious. Someone tell me I'm not the only one?
Ahem. That said, my fiance is now on a first-name basis with the UPS man because of the number of shoes I've had delivered to the condo as of late. Within the past 3 business days, 22 (yes, twenty two) pairs of shoes have come through my door, and a few more are on the way. No, I'm not opening my own shoe salon out of my walk-in closet... I need to find a shoe to wear for my wedding, and I have to have them before I go for my first dress fitting, so the dress can be properly hemmed.

I am looking for the following in a pair of wedding shoes:
  1. Ideal heel height between 2.5" and 3.25". I am banned from wearing heels more than 3" in the presence of my fiance, lest I tower over him a la Katie Holmes, but I can get away with that extra quarter inch because he'll get some lift out of his tux shoes and still manage to be the half-inch minimum taller than me. I would love to go for the highest heels possible, but I think with being on my feet for hours and hours and hours, something closer to 2.5" is probably the way to go.
  2. Leaning towards closed-toe, but sandals of substance are also considered. I love me some hot hot strappy sandals, but nothing beats a classic, closed toe shoe for a wedding. And under no circumstances are peep-toes allowed. Not only do I find them a little funny looking, but they hurt my toes like none other.
  3. White, silver, or blue in color. The wedding colors are black and white, so I was originally only looking at white shoes. Then I decided to branch into silver, since it is an accent color at the wedding, and I thought post-wedding I would get more wear out of silver shoes. But, since my favorite color is blue, my bridesmaids are carrying blue hydrangeas, and I'm supposed to wear something blue apparently, I thought perhaps a blue shoe is in order.
Without further ado, the front-runners in the shoe-lection (the rest of the 22 pairs have already been returned).

I'm a Two-Bit Tramp!

My fiance's mother found this and passed it along as her "suggestion" for the wording on our wedding invitation as a joke (or so she claims). My fiance finds this absolutely hysterical, and has taken to calling me two-bit. I'm continuing to remind him that it is not too late for me to call off the wedding, sell the ring on ebay, and use the money to take a nice long vacation someplace tropical with my best friend (any location preference, Mark?).

Also, we recently received word that a private donor will be giving our lab $75,000 for the purchase of a new protein purification system. I think I may have shed a tear of joy upon hearing the news. What does it say about my life that just the mere news that we will be getting a new purification system sometime in the upcoming months ranks among the top three events of my year, immediately behind passing comprehensive exams and getting engaged?

The Engagement

I find it funny that yesterday, Post-Doc commented that: "While I'm sure there will be continued misery in some sense, it has to be different with a ring and an excellent comps performance. Yay for you!" I swear that this lab is a giant happiness vacuum -- regardless of all other positive things in life, being in the lab just leaves me grumpy. I would, therefore, like to clarify that being stuck in the laboratory at 9pm with a splitting headache while waiting for experiments to finish is equally as miserable with or without an engagement ring and with or without the knowledge that I passed comprehensive exams.

Speaking of engagement rings, everyone has been asking me for the story of the engagement and for pictures of the ring. Considering that I spend nights in the lab until past 9pm, I don't have the time right now to personally re-tell the story to each and every person, so I figure if I explain it here, I can just direct those inquiring to this location. So, here goes (the very abbreviated, I'm more concerned with my protein refolding than my upcoming marriage, version):

Let me start out by saying that it wasn't a total surprise -- around November, as we were rapidly approaching our 4 year dating anniversary, we decided to sit down and discuss if we thought we had a definite future together. I know this seems like a funny thing to have to discuss, but staying together means the possibility of living apart for several years, as Scott will graduate medical school in a year and a half and probably head to Philadelphia for his residency, and I will be stuck in D.C. for at least another four years while I finish up my Ph.D. We figured if we made it through 4 years without strangling each other yet, we may as well try for a lifetime... so over "winter break" (i.e. everyone else relaxed while I locked myself in my room studying) he officially asked my parents for permission, and we started doing a little pre-planning (let the arguments with my mother begin!). I had (at Scott's request) been dropping hints about what kind of ring I wanted, and I knew that he had picked it up from the jeweler in mid-January, but I didn't know when or where he would officially propose (or what the ring looked like, as I gave him several ideas for things I liked).

Two weeks ago he finished up his psychiatry rotation and suggested that we go out to dinner to celebrate that night (when I noticed he was dressing up for dinner, I had a pretty good idea of what was coming). We went out to dinner at an Asian restaurant near our undergraduate school where we went on one of our first dates and afterwards walked through campus. Mind you, it was the coldest night of winter to date on this evening, and I was only expecting to go out to dinner, so I was not thoroughly bundled up. As we walked past his car, I knew he was dragging me down to the monuments and had I not known what was coming, I would have certainly protested out of fear of frostbite (meanwhile Scott had planned for the walk and was well prepared in his two pairs of socks.. but didn't bother to hint to me to wear something a tad warmer!). When we were undergrads, we used to walk around the monuments frequently at night, and right before we started dating I introduced him to the FDR memorial, which quickly became his favorite. After walking past the Lincoln and Vietnam memorials, we headed around the Tidal Basin and stopped at a bench across from the Jefferson and near FDR, where Scott stopped, talked a bit about our past, and then in true cheesy style, got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him and make him the happiest man in the District of Columbia (I warned you it was cheesy!). Of course, it was pitch black out so I couldn't even see the ring (had I been wittier, I would have refused to say yes until I saw the diamond) but I also had no desire to keep my hand out in the cold to scope out the new ring anyway. Afterwards, we walked the rest of the way around the Tidal Basin to the FDR where I ducked into the bathroom to check out my new asscher cut ring (which I am sure will start to dissolve the first time I spill acid on myself as per usual).

And now, in all my spare time (HA) I have to plan a wedding. It is perfectly acceptable to walk down the aisle in my white laboratory coat (I will, of course, have it cleaned for the occasion) and do all my registering on Fisher Scientific, right?
