Post-Call Valentine’s Day Waffles

Growing up, Valentine’s Day was always one of my favorite holidays. I don’t remember how, or when, or why the tradition started, but every year from the time I was in elementary school up through my junior high years, I had a big sleepover with all my closest girlfriends. My parents sacrificed a night of sleep (my father still talks about the night he learned that there is actually no sleep at a sleepover) so that 20 of my closest friends could spend the night in sleeping bags, giggling so loudly from the downstairs living room that my parents could hear us all night long all the way upstairs in their bedroom. We would play Twister and watch movies and eat heart-shaped cupcakes baked by my mother, and even to this day, friends that I lost touch with ten years ago suddenly sent me messages on Facebook yesterday saying that they still associate Valentine’s Day with my annual sleepovers. Even in high school, my friends and I would always make cards and cookies to distribute around, or buy candy-grams for each other. My freshman year of college, Valentine’s Day meant spending the evening curled up under a blanket with my closest friend at that point, watching girly movies and sharing a big bowl of popcorn.

For me, Valentine’s Day has always meant far more about loving friends than romantic love. Maybe that’s why I never understood the whole miserable, bitter “Single’s Awareness Day” attitude – whether or not I was attached, I’ve always loved taking the time out to tell my friends how much I love them and spending time with them if possible.

I think this is why it didn’t bother me that Husband was on call all day yesterday, and I didn’t see him at all on Valentine’s Day. In fact, it upset everyone else far more than it upset me – people seemed to place such importance on what we would be doing for our first Valentine’s Day as newlyweds and were so disappointed to discover that we weren’t going to be together – and were downright upset when I said that I didn’t really mind. By this point, he’s been on call through my birthday, our 1 month anniversary, our 3 month anniversary, New Years Eve, will be on call on our 1 year anniversary, and will miss so much more once he moves away… so really, what’s Valentine’s Day in the grand scheme of things? I spent the majority of my day in lab, sneaking away for a few hours to catch Confessions of a Shoapholic with two friends, which really made it the ideal Valentine’s Day for me – time with two friends that I adore, and rarely get to see (the whole ten hours in lab with proteins that don’t cooperate was kind of less than ideal, though).

Even though I wouldn’t be seeing him, I still wanted to try to do something for my husband. With Husband’s $250,000 medical school debt, we don’t really do gifts for each other for birthdays or Hanukkah, so gifts for Valentine’s Day were certainly out of the question (making payments on his 8% loan serves as all our gifts to each other for these occasions… and to think, before I got married, I had zero debt whatsoever!). So, I put on my Crafty Cap and decided to get work. I’ve mentioned before that Husband is doing his intern year in medicine, but I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned that afterward, he’ll be going into radiology. And thus, I decided to embroider him a little card to pack with his lunch… with a chest x-ray. What more could a future radiologist need? Apparently, it was quite the hit amongst all the residents in the ICU last night (Husband’s only complaint was why is he in normal clothes – shouldn’t he be in a white coat?) Of course, he said that now he can’t wait to see what I put together for next year, so I’m already accepting suggestions for radiology-themed Valentine’s gifts for 2010. FYI, embroidering a rib cage is slightly more complicated than one might think. I suggest not trying to do it freehanded.

This morning, I headed to the lab early to time the loading of my protein on the column with when he would be coming home from call, and made him chocolate waffles. I have a great Belgian waffle recipe that I will share in the future, but since Husband LOVES chocolate, I decided to spice things up and try making an all-chocolate version for a change. Apparently, they were a big hit (I passed on them, since I’m not a chocolate person myself).

Chocolate Fudge Waffles
Makes 2 Waffles

IMG_1164[5]wtmk

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/6 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk (I use fat-free)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (I use fat-free)

Directions:

  1. Preheat waffle iron.
  2. In a double boiler, melt chocolate and butter over low heat.
  3. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder.
  4. In a large bowl, beat together egg, milk, sour cream, and vanilla by hand. Gradually stir in flour mixture and melted chocolate and butter. Stir until smooth.
  5. Grease/oil/spray waffle iron per directions for individual iron. Pour enough batter to fill 2/3 of the waffle iron (half of batter). Push batter out to the edges with a spoon. Cook until crisp on edges and a dark rich brown (I have a Waring-Pro Belgian waffle maker with 6 heat settings; I cooked mine at setting 4).
  6. My husband topped his with maple syrup, but if I had one, I would have opted for whipped cream. Or a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Or maybe some vanilla ice cream…

  1. Wow! You are quite crafty. And I like how Valentine's day to you means more about friendship than romantic love. This year, my perfect valentine was getting to spend most of the day with Minnow.

  4. Oh my goodness that card is adorable! :) Great job with it... so cute and crafty... and oh so perfect for you two!

And fudgy waffles are a favorite in this house - but I've only made them from pre-made batters so I'll have to try this out!

  5. Your embroidery is too cute!
As for radiology themed valentine's things for 2010, I'll ask my husband - he works in the medical physics department of our city's cancer centre - so he knows a thing or two about x-rays and radiation.

  6. ScienceWoman - That sounds like a great Valentine's Day to me!

Kaitlyn - Thanks. I think my husband and I deserve each other... both for the good reasons, and the bad reasons. We each have a lot of things to learn from the other.

    Julie - Thanks!

Kim - I take it as such a compliment coming from you, as you are such a Queen of Craftiness! You should definitely give the waffles a try, my husband really enjoyed them, and they came together quite quickly.

WithoutAdornment - Let me know if your husband has any ideas. Whatever I make, I will learn from my mistake this year and put Hubby in a white coat, ha! While it will not be for many (many) (many) (even many more) years, I just realized that someday when we do have children, I'll have to craft him a little ultrasound something-or-other with a wee dot in a uterus!

  7. I bet I got just as much a kick out of the card as your husband's coworkers did! And I am pretty sure the waffles will be a hit as well.

I think your attitude is so refreshing - it really doesn't matter what days are on-call days, because it's all the other days that count.

    Thanks for sharing -

  8. Miss Outlier - It is so true, a holiday, or a birthday, or an anniversary is really just a date. The day on the calendar doesn't matter at all, but what the day stands for is what is important. Valentine's Day is kind of the outlier (ha, ha no pun intended) because it is a made-up holiday of sorts, but for anniversaries etc, what matters is that you celebrate the relationship (birthday, holiday, insert appropriate event) and the years spent together, whether or not you get to celebrate them ON that day.

I know it helps that I have lots of practice with this from my family. My uncle is a (fairly famous) opera singer, and spends most of his life in Europe, coming back to the United States only for breaks between operas or for special features at the Met. So, we're used to having family holidays around his schedule... Thanksgiving in February? Sure, why not! If that's when he's home, that's when we have the turkey and the stuffing and the cranberry sauce. The month means nothing, it's bringing the family together and being thankful for what we have that is significant... much like being with my husband on all those dates doesn't matter, but what does matter is making the most of the (sadly, far too sparse) time that we do get to spend with one another, and trying to come up with fun ways to show that we care when we aren't able to be around.

  9. I too love celebrating Valentine's day with everyone who makes me feel special, not just the man I married! Personally, I spent the afternoon/evening with a girlfriend who had to stay close to home making cookies, cake, and gingerbread followed by pizza and a movie. Mr. P stayed out with friends and met me in bet later that night. We were both blissfully happy that we had gone out for dinner together the night before - beating the crowds of people who are slaves the the #14!

    Your embroidery is beautiful!

  10. I love that card! It's very cute. Dr. Man and I just spent time together on Valentine's day. That's what we try to make our gift to each other: time together. Like you said, it's all just a date the real meaning is to spend time with each other.

  12. I love that card!! It's so cute!!! I wish I could embroider...I envy your craftiness!!!

I've spent many a Valentine's day with my best friends (whether I'm attached or not), you've totally got the right attitude. It's just a day, and judging the lovingness and validity of a relationship based on what is planned for you on V-day is so silly!!! You've inspired me to do a post on what we did for V-day.

  13. So cute! You have some mad embroidery skillz! I made my husband a card with a pull tab that ends up making 2 fish kiss (he loves fish). I can't wait to give it to him this weekend when I actually see him.

  14. Poledra - Splitting the day between a friend and husband sounds like a winning combination!

Amanda - Time together absolutely is a gift. Unfortunately, the Powers That Be did not want to grant Husband the gift of time off on Valentine's Day. Or birthdays. Or anniversaries. So instead, I make cards. :)

SGG - Thanks! A fun distraction from the woes of misbehaving proteins.

PD - Really, it's not that hard to do. I did it on simple cardstock since I had no fabric at home (and no car to get to a fabric store) and just poked holes in the cardstock using a pushpin and used a simple backstitch. Easy-peasy. Except for that ribcage part.

Albatross - Your card sounds super cute! Grackle will love it. On our wedding day, I painted Husband a card with two fish bowls. In one bowl was a little fish with a bowtie and in the other was a fish with a veil and the bride fish was jumping out of her fishbowl to go live with the groom fish in his fishbowl. Waaay back when before we were even dating, he bestowed upon me the pet name of "Juliefish" and it's just kind of stuck.

  17. Where is Disgruntled Julie? Did they lock you in the lab? Just checking on you :)

  18. Emileee - Unexpectedly fun is quite a compliment! I hope you will be back again! :)

UR - Wicked waffle craving -- uhoh. Do you at least own a waffle iron?

Julie - Thanks for the check-up. Indeed, the lab was the cause of my problems, though not an issue into which I am going to publicly delve.
